Standard set for Unix interface; accord helps system in fight with Microsoft
Article Abstract:
Over 50 Unix operating system vendors, including HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems, are expected to unveil a common application-programming-interface (API) standard for their different Unix versions on Sep 1, 1993. The move, which caps a series of cooperative agreements among Unix suppliers reached since 1991, aims to settle earlier infighting so that Unix vendors can present a common front in their marketing battle against Microsoft Corp's new Windows NT operating system. The Unix API standard will support commercial development of such applications as spreadsheet, graphics, word-processing and database software. The vendor community hopes it will convince independent software developers, who have previously declined to target the Unix market due to the difficulty of developing applications compatible with the many different version of Unix in use, to begin producing shrink-wrapped Unix programs for the consumer market.
