The average pretax compensation of Canadian chief executives on the top 100 of the lst was C$3.4 million in 1998, up by 26% from C$2.7 million in 1997. In contrast, earnings at Canada's 135 top companies declined by 18%. The top three Canadian executivses in terms of compensation were Barrick CEO Peter Munk (C$38.9 million), Loblaw Pres Richard Currie ($34.1 million) and Magna International Chmn Frank Stronach ($26.2 million)

Exports to U.S. to slow: EDC

Canada's Export Development Corp. has released its semi-annual forecast of Canadian exports. The report reveals that U.S. economic sluggishness will result in reduced exports of Canadian motor vehicles and other consumer products while the high-tech sector will continue to grow.
