The Liberal Party has shifted positions on major issues a great deal in the past, but it always managed to win unified support from caucus members. However, under Prime Minister Jean Chretien's rule, greater discord is tolerated on issues such as abortion and foreign affairs.

Grace under fire
Article Abstract:
The little the Liberal Party has accomplished has been obscured by the grace of its politicians, which makes trivial issues appear complex and important. As the Liberal Party comes under attack, it will be interesting to see if its members can remain graceful.

The Progressive Conservative Party, turned out by Chretien's Liberals in 1993, appears to have a good chance to return the favor in the upcoming elections. Even if the Liberals win, they will be seriously weakened. Three likely outcomes are analyzed.
