Article Abstract:
MetaDesign 3.0, $350, from Meta Software, Cambridge, MA, is computer software for creating organizational charts or diagrams of process flows. MetaDesign 3.0 runs on MS-DOS microcomputers with Microsoft Windows. It is so easy to use, it is fun. The program comes with a manual that starts with a three-lesson explanatory tour. The rest of the manual is devoted to advanced features and reference. Designs can be reduced or enlarged. An 'undo' feature allows a user to erase as many as 10 previous operations. Diagrams made with MetaDesign are compatible with many other programs. Upgrades are $69.95, or they are free if the program was purchased after Jul 1, 1991. There is a version for Macintosh microcomputers, which costs $250. Separately in this article, a book titled 'Computerization and Controversy: Value Conflicts and Social Choices,' (Academic Press, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich; $34.95) is mentioned and described. The book is edited by Charles Dunlop and Rob King.

A competent and integrated program for Macintosh users
Article Abstract:
Claris Corp's $299 ClarisWorks is an integrated software package that combines word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics and communications features into one product. ClarisWorks allows Apple Macintosh users to work in any module without necessarily leaving one of the others. This integration is smoother than that offered by Microsoft Works, and ClarisWorks even allows Microsoft Works files to be converted to a format that ClarisWorks can read. The program offers several extra features not often found in integrated programs including footnotes, multiple columns, grid placement, and a maximum spreadsheet size of 256 columns by 16,384 rows. The package includes excellent documentation and requires System 6.0.5 or later with a hard disk. Users with greater database needs than the program can meet may purchase FileMaker Pro, which interfaces easily with ClarisWorks.

Numbers into pictures
Article Abstract:
Timeworks' $49.95 Graph It! and Spinnaker Software's $59.95 Eight-in-One 2.0 computer graphics software packages are compared and described. Graph It!, which takes numbers from almost any spreadsheet or data base file and transforms them into one of nine graph types, is praised for its ease of use and speed. Graph It! runs on the Apple IIGS but does not take advantage of the machine's more advanced features. Eight-in-One, an integrated program for MSDOS machines, offers a number of computer tools in one package, including a word processor, spelling checker, outliner, data base, spreadsheet, graphics maker, communications package and desktop manager. One problem with integrating so many tools in one package is that each is less powerful than their stand-alone equivalents.
