Chief executive quits at Cray Computer
Article Abstract:
Cray Computer Corp announces that President and Chief Executive Officer Neil Davenport will resign his post. In his wake, the founder of the four-year old company, Seymour R. Cray, will take over Davenport's responsibilities until a successor is found. Cray Computer is perceived to be in financial difficulty because it cannot find a buyer for its Cray-3 supercomputer. Angered by delays, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which was to have purchased the first model, canceled its order. The Cray-3 was designed to connect 16 processors working in parallel. The company may now attempt to sell a cheaper model using eight or four processors. Seymour Cray developed the supercomputer while working at Control Data Corp in the 1960s; he then went on to found Cray Research.
