Christma season sales dealt a blow

Insolvent department store chain T Eaton Company Ltd has started the biggest liquidation sale in Canadian history. The retailer posted a 12% decline in sales during the 1998 holiday period, dashing hopes of possible recovery for the ailing company. Eaton, which has reported a loss of C$72 million in FY98 ended Jan 30, 1999, has a total liabilities of C$328.8 million, with $200.4 million of that as a secured debt.
