Compaq plans debut today of upgradable computers; when better parts are developed, customers can just plug them in
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp will introduce four microcomputers on Monday, Sep 16, 1991. The new products are notable for their modular design, which allows key parts to be easily replaced when better technologies evolve. Three of the machines, priced between $3,199 and $7,199, are built around Intel's 80486 microprocessor. The fourth machine uses the Intel 80386 and comes in three versions, each costing less than $4,000. Compaq also plans price reductions on other 80386 models, with low-end machines selling for less than $3,000. Compaq has been experiencing financial difficulties which it blames on competition, the recession and problems with distribution. On May 15, 1991, the company's stock fell 27 percent, to $36 per share, after the release of news about poor earnings. The stock was down 50 cents on Friday, Sep 13, closing at $36.

Compaq Computer Corp is expected to introduce two laptop computers, weighing 4 to 7 pounds, and comparable to many desktop computers in performance. The new products will be the first notebook-sized computers that have hard disks, and one of the models will have a 80C286 chip, more powerful than those used by Compaq's competition. Analysts feel the company now has an edge on the market with its new machines and the growing trend towards smaller computers. Prices for the LTE and LTE/286 Compaq models range from $2,499 to $4,999, and include various options such as a 20Mbyte or 40Mbyte hard disk.
