Cut to the chase
Article Abstract:
Australian treasurer, Peter Costello, claims that failure by the states to divert part of their GST revenue to the federal government would be a breach of the 1999 Intergovernmental Agreement that set out how the GST would be administered and the money distributed. However, the states do not seem inclined to bow to the federal pressure, as their budgets cannot afford the $8.8 billion revenue loss that the federal government is trying to force on them.

This by-election rates interest
Article Abstract:
The Werriwa by-election has become a battleground, of sorts, over the economy and some Labor strategists believe the expectation of bad economic news was the very reason the Liberals decided against contesting the March 19 by-election. The treasurer thinks interest rates up to 10% are low, which provides an interesting perspective on the Coalition's 'Keeping interest rates low' election slogan.
