Detention dissenters

Australian Prime minister, John Howard, called for a government rethink of the indefinite detention of asylum-seekers in response to the Liberal Party's moves for a private member's bill against the policy. A private member's bill would force the Liberal Party and cabinet conservatives to defend the system, whereby some asylum-seekers have remained in detention for many years while their cases are assessed.

The poll indicates that Greens preferences would flow strongly to Labor, even though the ALP is yet to outline its final intentions in relation to the contentious issue of logging in Tasmania's iconic old-growth forests

Radical Industrial relation changes proposed by the federal government has met opposition from various unions, some church leaders and in the parliament by Labor party. This is a golden opportunity for the Labor party and Kim Beazley, potential Prime Minister Candidate of Labor party to win support by spearheading the campaign.
