Australian Prime Minister John Howard's appointment of Helen Coonan as revenue minister was done at the suggestion of Peter Costello. Danna Vale was appointed veterans affairs minister and Brendan Nelson was appointed minister of education, training and science due to their efforts at buttering up the Prime Minister. Simon Crean of the Labor Party has also made appointments to his shadow cabinet.

A study was conducted to find out how voters rate issues and how they judge the government's handling of those issues. Bronwyn Bishop pointed out that matters regarded as Coalition issues were not rated highly by voters in terms of importance and were languishing down the list.
