More layoffs are seen at Digital
Article Abstract:
DEC will lay off between 7,500 and 8,800 employees by Dec 7, 1992 in addition to 5,300 the previous quarter, in an attempt to survive losses of billions of dollars. DEC employs 108,500 people worldwide and expects 25,000 more layoffs between 1992 and 1994. Over 26,000 employees are in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where the bulk of the Dec 7 layoffs will be. The region's economy depends on DEC, and workers are worried about the effect of continued layoffs. DEC hopes to reduce itself to the size of HP, a competitor with similar revenue but 20,000 fewer employees. DEC is also cutting its engineering budget, especially in software development.

Digital trims its severance benefits
Article Abstract:
DEC is reducing the severance package it will pay employees who are laid off. The company wants to fire more workers without having to dip into any more than the $1.5 billion funds allocated for the restructuring. DEC may reduce its work force by up to 25,000 employees by 1994. The company's current work force totals 108,500. The initial severance package was designed to entice middle management officials to leave the company, but the new pay structure reflects DEC's desire to weed out underperformers. DEC also announced that it is cutting some of the prices of its products.
