Digitally disenfranchised; Bell companies are blamed for the slow start of a fast Internet service
Article Abstract:
Small Internet firms complain that the Bell companies use their local-loop carrier positions to their own advantage with regard to D.S.L., Digital Subscriber Line, the high-speed Internet service, essentially functioning as monopolies. Consumers complain that despite the advantages enjoyed by large phone firms, these firms are not necessarily providing better or more affordable D.S.L. service. Complaints to this effect have been lodged against Pacific Bell and BellSouth. In contrast, true competition does seem to exist between D.S.L. service and the high-speed Internet access offered by cable television firms via cable modems.
