Does current FDA policy protect consumers from the potentially harmful effects of bioengineered foods?
Article Abstract:
The FDA's policy of not testing genetically engineered food additives that have previously been proven safe has raised some concerns. The FDA claims that an additive's history of safe use in food speaks for itself, and if that additive is included in a different food, it does not need to be tested. This holds for genetic additives as well. Opponents claim that it could pose a threat of allergic reaction in people who are not aware of its addition. Someone who is allergic to tartar sauce will not eat it, but if tartar sauce is genetically added to T-bone steak they may ingest it without knowing.

Will privately invested retirement accounts relieve the financial squeeze facing the Social Security system?
Article Abstract:
Many believe that returns from a privately invested retirement account will be greater than the government-run Social Security. With the current system in place through year 2010, payroll taxes will be insufficient to finance Social Security. However, others believe that private accounts would expose workers to market fluctuations. Furthermore, private accounts cost more to administer, which will reduce the amount available to support pensions.

Should the FDA privatize its product-review process?
Article Abstract:
Disagreement exists on whether the US Food and Drug Administration should turn over its product-review process to outsiders. FDA critics see greater technical accuracy if independent scientific groups do the reviewing. However, supporters of the FDA note that the agency has extensive product files and continuity of experience, besides institutional safeguards against bias or conflict of interest.
