Early crackdowns
Article Abstract:
Smoking has been considered a vile and evil habit throughout history. King James I banned tobacco in early 17th century and in 19th century smoking was banned in Berlin to protect nonsmokers rights. In the 19th century, while mass production increased the availability of tobacco products, public opinion against smoking also gained momentum. The first anti-smoking group, the Nonsmokers' Protective League, was set up in 1910. The two World Wars and the women's rights movement led to a greater acceptance of smoking. However, strong public opinion against spitting by those chewing tobacco led to an anti-spitting law in 1920s.

Sobering problems
Article Abstract:
Underage drinking is a problem that, in all likelihood, will continue to plague society. Although it cannot be eliminated, the teenage drinking problem can be minimized, as can the bigger problem of overall alcohol abuse. Education is one of the principal ways by which this can be achieved. The monitoring of the youth, however, must be carried out with restraint, lest their growth and maturity be stifled.
