Earnings at Apple beat expectations; sales miss target

Apple Computer reports second quarter profits of $61 million, 17 cents a share, up 3 cents above Wall Street predictions. Profit margins were 29.4% with $4.2 billion in cash and securities. Revenue for the quarter was $1.53 billion. Apple is expanding its customer base in the public school market with its iBooks, overtaking Dell Computer. Apple is also planning to open retail stores starting in May.

I.B.M. to Lay Off Over 10,000, Mostly in Europe
Article Abstract:
International Business Machines Corp will lay off between 10,000 and 13,000 workers mostly in Germany, France and Italy before the end of 2005. The cutbacks are expected to reduce I.B.M.'s operating expenses by at least $1 billion.
