New Xerox software set for offices: fax machines to store data from computers
Article Abstract:
Xerox Corporation introduces PaperWorks, a $249 text management software package that allows standard office facsimile machines to store and retrieve information from a microcomputer anywhere in telephone distance. The product runs on Microsoft Windows and IBM PCs and compatibles. Users can fill out forms and transmit these forms by fax, directing the computer to store, retrieve or reroute electronic mail messages and facsimile documents. PaperWorks relies on a new technology called Glyph that allows the compact storage of data on paper to be read at a later time by computer. Xerox hopes that the concept and product are successful, and that the technology becomes an industry standard.

I.B.M. stumbles, while records fall at Apple; Big Blue's shares slide to 10-year low
Article Abstract:
IBM reports 3rd qtr losses of $2.78 billion, or $4.87 per share, a result of the company's large charge taken to cover the layoff of 20,000 workers who accepted early retirement and a reflection of the company's lower net income. Revenue for the quarter was $14.7 billion. The results surprised analysts and the company's stock subsequently dropped $5.125 to $72.875, which is the lowest level in ten years. The company's stock had risen above $100 in July 1992, when IBM's cost-cutting reorganization sparked renewed interest in the company. In 3rd qtr 1991, IBM posted a net income of $177 million, or 31 cents per share, on revenue of $14.45 billion.
