Eaton's closings could help landlords

The closure of financially troubled the 64-store chain T Eaton Co Ltd of Toronto, Ontario, may benefit landlords, according to industry analysts. The chain pays an average of not more than C$3 or $4 per sq ft to operate in malls, while specialty shops pays up to $100 per sq ft in a much smaller space. Eaton has closed its warehouse and eliminated 300 jobs following the failure of its its negotiations with an unnamed buyer.

GM Canada buys Swiss pioneer in light-armoured vehicles

Switzerland's Mowag Motorwagenfabrik AG, a pioneer in making light- armoured vehicles, has been acquired in Jul 1999 by the London, Ontario, Canada-based General Motors of Canada Ltd. Diesel Div for an undisclosed price. The deal will allow GM Canada's armoured-vehicle unit to gain a bigger portion of the military vehicle market, which shrinking because of declining defense budgets.
