The Royal Victoria and Montreal General hospitals sparked the ire of anglophones when the administration of the two hospitals issued a directive telling employees to address patients in French first. Although the hospitals are officially bilingual, many view them as anglophone.

Five members of the Order of the Solar Temple killed themselves in a house fire in St. Casimir, Quebec. Two couples died of smoke inhalation and one women died of a likely drug overdose. Three teenagers were permitted to survive.
