Experts square off over Net's role in Calif. power crisis
Article Abstract:
The Internet is perceived as a power-sucking vampire that is worsening the energy crisis in California. Experts estimate that Internet-related computers, telecommunications and networking devices siphon 3% to 8% of the electricity of the US. Server farms that house rows of computers that run Web sites and other business operations are regarded as the worst culprit. The debate, which has flared in 2000, arose again in Jan 2001, as electricity shortages forced California utilities to impose rolling blackouts across the state, leaving 1 million businesses and residents in the dark.
