Article Abstract:
The UK armed forces has decided to begin testing women soldiers for ground combat by early 2001. The move, which is expected to pressure the US military to begin its own testing, will test how female soldiers will perform in realistic battlefield conditions. Among the tasks being planned for inclusion in the testing are marching with loaded backpacks, lifting of heavy ammunition, weapon firing and trench digging. No hand-to-hand combat will be done.
