Fighting the Idea That All the Internet Is Free
Article Abstract:
The Recording Industry Association of America has filed 261 lawsuits against people who have taken copyrighted songs off the Internet without paying for them, an activity also known as online music piracy. In the future, other media firms, too, will have to contend with illegal file sharing, and finding a profitable business model that solves the challenges posed by digital distribution. Unlike other media industries, the recording industry finds itself in the odd position of trying to scare the very consumers who are its best customers, namely, young people. In addition to cracking down on illegal file sharing, at least one record company has lowered the wholesale price of CDs in an attempt to make it more advantageous to download songs legally or buy CDs in stores.

As high-tech devices go mainstream, it will be necessary to simplify and integrate the technology for use by the average consumer, who will not tolerate overly-complex devices that are hard to understand how to operate.
