Companies are offering highly attractive referral programs to entice their employees to participate in recruiting prospective employees. Due to the tight labor market, companies are finding difficult to attract new recruits. Texas Instruments reward employees who recommend successful applicants by including them in raffles for vehicles. Nortel Networks has implemented a $1 million cash and prizes program for employees who successfully find new hires for specific positions.

Automakers offer benefits to partners of gay employees

The US' top three automakers announced that they will offer health benefits to partners of gay employees, an indication that such benefits are becoming mainstream. Kim Mills of the Human Rights Campaign, the move will have a significant impact since the auto industry is seen as traditional. For instance, the benefits may only cost $5 million annually for Ford Motor since it expects less than 1% of its 159,000 salaried workers to use the benefits.

Corporate intranets help bring employees into the loop
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of corporations are establishing internal Internet World Wide Web sites to help workers handle personal business matters and work faster. These corporate intranets were mostly incidental to traditional company bulletin boards as early as 1999. Based on a survey by Watson Wyatt Worldwide, 80% of firms in 2000 are using their intranet as the main vehicle for delivering human resources services, up from 50% in 1998.
