Flagging funds reveal their plans for comeback

The C$34.7-million Atlas Canadian Emerging Growth Fund suffered the biggest loss among small-cap funds in 1998. The fund declined by 32.6% compared with the 13.7% loss of the average Canadian small- to mid-cap fund. The C$63.5-million Green Line Energy Fund posted a loss of 50.8%, the largest among funds that focus on the energy sector. The C$278-million C.I. Pacific Fund reported a 17.5% decline, compared to the average loss of 4.3% for Asian and Pacific Rim funds.

CIBC raises rates on mortgages

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has effected an increase in its long-term mortgage rates. The mortgage rate has been increased by as much as one-quarter of a percentage point on terms of three years or more. The increase has been influenced by the spiraling increase in bond yields in both Canada and the United States.

High cost of asphalt steamrolls plans
Article Abstract:
Impact of rising asphalt prices on municipality road and infrastructure construction in Canada, are discussed. Asphalt prices have increased because refineries have given priority to production of petroleum, thus leading to low production of asphalt.
