Fliers skip check-in lines as kiosks pop up at airports
Article Abstract:
Major airlines are increasingly using self-service kiosks to decongest passenger traffic at airports. Passengers holding electronic ticket reservations can use the kiosks to check in, choose a seat, obtain a boarding pass, check their luggage and view frequent-flier accounts. As of 2000, Alaksa Airlines has the most kiosks, with 363 in 65 airports. United Airlines will have 800 kiosks in 25 airports by mid-2001.

Airlines bump more fliers; Delta has the higest rate
Article Abstract:
The percentage of involuntary denied boarding among airlines, also referred to as bumping, is increasing among US airlines. The bumping rate increased to 1.44 for every 10,000 passengers in the first quarter, compared to 0.82 per 10,000 in the 4th qtr of 1998 and 0.95 in Jan-Mar 1998. Bumping occurs when airlines overbook some flights by 10%-15% because they anticipate that some passengers will not show up at their scheduled flights. Delta has the highest bumping rate at 3.33 per 10,000 passengers.
