Ford, CAW reach deal to avoid auto strike

Ford Motor Company of Canada Ltd has reached an new labor agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union. The new deal calls for a 4.5% annual wage increase, a cost-of-living allowance, a $1,000 signing bonus, special paid absences and better pensions for retirees. The new contract averted a planned strike by 13,000 Ford employees. The Ford contract is expected to be used as a standard when CAW negotiates with other motor vehicle companies.

Daimler plants could shut tonight

The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) could declare a strike against DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc midnight of Oct 5, 1999 if they cannot come to an agreement regarding union representation in a major supplier plant. The CAW wants DaimlerChrysler's help in the unionization of Magna International Inc's seat-making facility in Windsor, Ont. CAW pres Buzz Hargrove claimed that over 50% of the plant's workers have signed union cards.
