Improvements take wing at US airports
Article Abstract:
Major US airports are likely to spend a record $9.8 billion on capital improvements in 2000. The deregulation of the airline industry has left many airports, which were built in the 1960s and 1970s, unprepared for the deluge of travelers. US airports that are currently undergoing expansion include New Yorks' JFK, New Jersey's Newark International, Illinois' Chicago O'Hare and California's Los Angeles International.

Four large airlines, namely American, Alaska, Delta and Northwest airlines announced on Mar 22, 2000 that they are looking for ways to secure the cockpit doors on jets to protect their crews from violent passengers. The action was prompted in Mar 2000 by an assault on an Alaska Airlines MD-80 wherein an intruder broke open the locked cockpit door and almost reached the airplane's controls. In another incident, a passenger on an America West jet slugged a co-pilot after the latter opened the cockpit door.
