Canadian clothing retailers had sales of $2.4 billion in the first quarter of 1997, an increase of 4.4% over the same period in 1996. The reviving Canadian economy is spurring an improvement in consumer spending, which rose at an annualized rate of 5.2% in the first three months of 1997.

Vultures closing in: Eaton's creditors may decide the empire's ultimate fate

Eaton's filed for bankruptcy on Feb 27, 1997. Some of the chain's creditors have sold their stake to high-risk US investors who specialize in buying up debt. Eaton's has implemented a restructuring plan that calls for reviewing the viability of 31 stores.

Eatons was granted bankruptcy protection in Mar 1997. The 86-store chain has had chronic problems. Its market share shrank from 50% in the 1950s and 1960s to 11.4% in the mid-1990s. Revenues had declined by $500 million since 1992.
