GM pushes for deal, but progress is slow
Article Abstract:
General Motors (GM)) pressed the United Auto Workers (UAW) to reach a contract in the second weekend of July 1998 in order to end a couple of strikes at the Flint Metal Center and Delphi East parts factory. Ending the strikes would enable factories of GM to resume their operations. However, Richard Shoemaker, the vice president of UAW, commented the progress of GM-UAW negotiations have been "painstakingly slow." GM wanted that the strikes would end soonest because the company's two-week vacation closure ends on Jul. 13, 1998. The strikes have idled 26 of 29 assembly facilities of GM.
