GM to halt Oshawa truck work
Article Abstract:
General Motors of Canada Ltd. will shut down its truck plant in Oshawa, Ontario, due to the two US worker strikes that hit the company, in a move that will interrupt the launching of the company's most important vehicle. The lack of parts due to the strikes prompted the closure of the plant, which also leads to the termination of 3,000 Canadian workers, increasing the number of laid-off GM North American workers to 166,000. Mike Shields, president of the Canadian Auto Workers Union Local 222 in Oshawa, said that the plant is only awaiting to consume all the remaining spare parts in its inventory before operations in the plant are halted.
