GST politics may catch labor unprepared
Article Abstract:
Indications in the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria in Feb 1999 show that the politics of the general sales tax (GST) may hurt the Labor Party. Taxes are traditionally opposed by voters, and the economic well-being that may provide support for the tax is not solely dependent on Australian performance. Australia's economy is linked to the US economy.

Article Abstract:
China's capital investment boom has led to excess production of many commodities where steelmaking capacity in China exceeds demand by 120 million tonnes. This over capacity has forced Australian steelmakers like Bluescope to downgrade their profit outlook and steel manufacturers are being crushed by Chinese competition in the market.
