Gains in Houston Schools: How Real Are They?
Article Abstract:
The Houston, TX public schools have advocated their programs for improving student performance, but overall test results and the experiences of college students reflect a different assessment of the value of these programs. Both Houston and Pres. Bush boasted that the results of the state test, the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS), showed improvements in academic achievement levels, but the scores of Texas students in national SATs had minor imrpovements, and high school reading test results had decreased. Houston also has had a problem with dropouts, and the number of college-bound students was exaggerated.
