Goodale rejects provincial plan

Canada's federal finance minister, Ralph Goodale has rejected a proposal to reform the country's securities regulation system even as he accepted a report that calls for changes in the regulation system. The report calls for a single regulator to take decisions on the securities market where minister stated that such decisions cannot be made in haste and need to be studied in detail.

Tobacco firm loses round in lawsuit over fatal fire

A legal maneuver by Montreal, Quebec-based Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd. was rejected by an Ontario judge in a class-action lawsuit over the fire-related deaths of three people. The Ontario Superior Court ruled that the tobacco company may be sued by the victim's surviving relatives for failing to make a safe cigarette.

Ottawa to appeal cigarette ruling

Toronto, Ont.-based RJR-Macdonald Inc. has been accused by the Canadian government of tax evasion. Canada, which lost its case against the tobacco company in New York district court, alleges that RJR-Macdonald cheated the government out of about $1 billion by participating in a smuggling operation.
