House OKs tax cut for couples
Article Abstract:
A proposed tax cut that would benefit married couples has been passed by the House of Representatives and will proceed to the Senate for discussion. The 10-year, $182-billion tax cut is designed to reduce the so-called 'marriage penalty' confronted by roughly 25 million two-income families, that forces these families to pay higher taxes on joint returns than they would if they filed separately as singles. Sponsors of the proposed cut say that its passage would be one step toward achieving tax fairness.

House votes to end federal phone tax
Article Abstract:
The House of Representatives voted unanimously for the eradication of the 3% federal tax on telephone service on May 25, 2000. The House vote was 420-2, which marks step one of the repeal of the federal phone tax that was instated in 1898 to finance the Spanish-American War. The issue then heads to the Senate where its future is uncertain like other tax proposals that have been stalled in the upper house.

Tax cut appears dead for '99
Article Abstract:
Americans cannot expect tax cut to be approved by both the executive and legislative branches at the end of 1999. This appears as the Republican congressional leaders said they will not hold end-of-year talks with President Clinton in which a bargain over spending increases and tax cuts would be set aside. The $792-billion, 10-year tax-cut bill that Congress passed in Aug 1999 would be vetoed by the President.
