I.B.M. spins off PC business into new company
Article Abstract:
IBM announces the creation of the IBM Personal Computer Co, which will henceforth be in charge of the development, manufacture, distribution and marketing of personal computers. The new company's functions used to be distributed among various divisions of the conglomerate. The reorganization is part of the ongoing restructuring of IBM, as defined by its chairman John F. Akers, which mandates the creation of smaller independent units. Robert J. Corrigan, one of IBM's vice presidents, has been appointed president of the new company while Edward F. Rogers, another vice president, was named chief financial officer. James Cannavino, general manager of the personal systems business will oversee the new company but will concentrate on alliances instead of day-to-day operations. New products, such as PS/1 microcomputers based on the Intel 80486 chip, will be announced soon.

Executives are shifted by I.B.M.: high-growth areas to be emphasized
Article Abstract:
IBM is restructuring its top echelon to make the personal computer, minicomputer and workstation areas of the company more competitive. Company President Jack D. Kuehler will personally oversee the Application Business Systems and Personal Systems Divisions. Senior VP Terry R. Lautenbach will be added to the five-member management committee and will head the networking systems, technology products, mainframe and programming systems lines. These areas provide a substantial part of IBM income, but are slow growing. The appointment places Lautenbach in the running for chairmanship of IBM. The company stresses the freeing of the desktop line from a cumbersome management structure, which should allow IBM's microcomputer products to become more responsive to the marketplace. IBM's market share has slipped as customers show preference for lower-priced compatibles.
