I.B.M. sells first of new computers; parallel machine may replace the mainframe
Article Abstract:
IBM sells its first Power Parallel supercomputer to Cornell University's Theory Center for $3 million. The new system, which uses parallel processing technology, can handle the tasks that have been performed by mainframes but at a much lower cost. IBM officials say that the Power Parallel machine is the first in a family of parallel computers. The supercomputers will be targeted at research centers and oil companies, which use supercomputers for seismic analysis, and drug companies for molecular studies of new drugs. Cornell's purchase was aided by a three-year, $12.3 million grant from the New York State Urban Development Corp. The IBM Power Parallel for Cornell initially has 64 processors but will eventually be expanded to a 512-processor model.
