IBM to place Lotus at core of its PC networking plans
Article Abstract:
IBM Corp is using Lotus Development Corp's Lotus Notes and ccMail to replace part of the Officevision desktop software strategy it has just shelved. Lotus Notes, an office automation software, is designed to link groups of office workers and enable them to share information and ccMail is an electronic mail program. The IBM-Lotus deal implies admission on IBM's part that its multi-billion dollar project to develop a unified desktop software approach has not succeeded. Some software company executives are not pleased with IBM's move to Lotus. IBM's announcement in 1991 of its alliance with Lotus was not taken seriously by some observers who saw it merely an attempt to stir up momentum for OS/2. IBM wants its OS/2 operating system software to be competitive with Microsoft Corp's Windows as a platform for IBM and IBM-compatible microcomputers.

Lotus buying Approach Software and acquiring a data base program
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp announces that it will acquire Approach Software Corp, a data base software publisher based in Redwood City, CA. The financial details of the deal are not disclosed but Lotus officials say the acquisition will generate a one-time pretax charge against earnings of up to $20 million in the quarter that the acquisition was completed. By buying Approach, Lotus will now have a data base product line in addition to its spreadsheets, word processing, communications and graphics programs. Approach's $399 Approach data base management system (DBMS) has won awards for ease of use. Unlike the more sophisticated DBMS in the market, Approach is designed for casual computer users who need to create their own DBMS.
