2 retired officers to return to I.B.M
Article Abstract:
IBM recalls two executives from retirement to help run the company. The move comes following the IBM's announcement that it will take a $6 billion charge against earnings in the 4th qtr of 1992 and will eliminate 25,000 more jobs. Rizzo was once a rival of IBM Chmn John F. Akers for the company's top job, and industry observers see Rizzo's recall as a way to provide IBM's board with a 'second opinion' on management issues. Akers says Rizzo and Cassani will serve as 'counselors and advisers.' An IBM spokesman elaborates, saying the two men will focus on increasing the independence of IBM business units. Akers is not expected to share duties or responsibilities with Rizzo and Cassani.

Text of chairman's message to the employees at I.B.M
Article Abstract:
On Friday, Jun 14, 1991, IBM Chmn John F. Akers circulated a message to IBM's employees via the company's electronic communication system. The message reinforces previous remarks by Akers about IBM's competitive position in the industry. Akers emphasizes that the quality of work at IBM must improve. He says that employees need to understand that they have a personal stake in market share, revenues and profits. 'A healthy level of concern,' he says, is essential. IBM's success, says Akers, will be measured in two ways: by customer satisfaction; and by balanced growth in market share and profitability.
