The popularity of the television series, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' reveals that youth culture increasingly identifies with the gothic or romantic imagination. Although the show is violent, and often disturbing and bleak, it is set within a context of moral responsibility and redemption. These Gothic sensibilities often occur in a culture at times of moral and technological shifts.

The legal ceremony of divorce has elements in common with the marriage ceremony. Some people are accompanied by guests to the courtroom to get a divorce. The couple takes vows, responding to the judge's questions about agreements over property and children. The judge declares the couple unmarried. Some people are joyful after the ceremony.
