In praise of government: federal rescue authorities did themselves proud in dealing with the Quebec flooding tragedy

Canadians love to complain about their federal government, but two recent issues have made it clear how important government is to public safety. The Emergency Preparedness Canada did a great job of evacuating people during the Jul 1996 Quebec floods, and airline regulators implemented code-sharing disclosure laws.

Trying to snuff out smoking: the health minister prepares to table tough legislation

Dingwall introduced new federal regulations of the tobacco industry that would raise taxes on cigarettes, ban most tobacco-related advertising and restrict tobacco sponsorship of public events. Opponents of the new regulations plan a court challenge on freedom-of-speech grounds.
