Industry blames cheap foreign steel
Article Abstract:
Weirton Steel, which is the lifeblood of a community of 22,000 in Weirton, W. VA, is fighting for its chance to live. Over 60% of city revenue is derived from the steel enterprise such that if the firm dies so will the city. The steel company is in danger of being shutdown like the rest of the US steel industry because of the influx of inexpensive steel imports. Russia, Japan and Brazil have flooded the US market with these imports whose prices are less than the cost it would take for US steel firms to make and ship them. Steel manufacturers have asked the Clinton Administration for help with possible tariffs being eyed on foreign steel.
