Internet discounts give fliers some relief from fare hikes

Airline passengers are gaining some advantages in purhcasing tickets through the Internet as carriers wage their fare war online. Many passengers are shop for tickets online where they can find the lowest fares. The Internet also becoming an alternative for travelers as airlines increased fares four times in 1999. Online ticket sales contribute around 5% of total US ticket sales and the figure is projected to double by the end of 2000.

Fliers' complaints double in 1999
Article Abstract:
Airlines and air travel companies saw the number of consumer complaints logged with the US Department of Transportation more than double to 20,495 in 1999 from 9,608 a year ago. The increase came despite efforts by the industry to boost passenger satisfaction. Industry officials say the increase can be blamed on easier ways by which consumers can complain, particularly Web sites such as PassengerRights.com and 1travel.com.

Airlines delve deeper into net with e-booking, check-ins

The players of the airlines industry is giving more emphasis on the Internet to allow e-booking and check-ins. For instance, Southwest Airlines Inc reported that bookings from its Internet site attributed for 27% of passenger revenue in January 2000, which according to industry analysts is the highest percentage of any major airline. Northwest Airlines Inc is set to test an Internet program that will allow passenger to use a PC at the office or home to check in for a flight and secure boarding passes.
