Article Abstract:

The US President George W. Bush's plan to spread democracy in the Middle East is turning into a misfortune as it has borne strange results, culminating in Hamas's victory in Gaza and the West Bank. Many Islamists have reinvented themselves and the present events have shown that promoting democracy and promoting liberty are separate projects.

The trends in Iraq and the loopholes in Shia strategy are reported . The trends seem to be moving in two different directions and the intractable security problems in Sunni areas coupled with Shia ones might lead toward a Shia strategy in Iraq.

The views of the French and German governments, who proposed to handover Iraq to Iraqis, are discussed. However, the notion of quick transfer seems to be impractical, unwise and dangerous.
