Izzy Asper ascends to TV's throne
Article Abstract:
CanWest Global Communications Corp. and Shaw Communications Inc. announced a C$1.4-billion deal to end the dispute involving WIC Western International Communications Ltd. The settlement occurred in mid-June 1998 at the ninth floor of Shaw's headquarters in Calgary, Canada, after nine months of acrimonious fighting. David Asper, executive vice president and eldest child of company creator Israel (Izzy) Asper, led a team of senior CanWest officials. Meanwhile Shaw President Jim Shaw, son of company founder J.R. Shaw, was on the other side. Izzy Asper stands to inherit the biggest private national television network because of the deal.
