Juniper Networks Inc. is set to announce its new router, apparently the first that can consistently handle Internet data traffic of 10 billion digital bits a second. Major communications firms have already lined up to buy the new router, including Uunet, Cable and Wireless PLC and KPN. One feature that convinced buyers is the technology that lets different digital bits be transmitted with different levels of priority.

Nortel agrees to buy Alteon for $7.8 billion in stock

Nortel Networks Corp. of Canada has agreed to acquire Internet server equipment maker Alteon WebSystems Inc. The acquisition is valued at $7.8 billion in stock and is the second major acquisition for Nortel in the past two years, when it acquired Bay Networks Inc. for $9.1 billion. The acquisition will benefit Nortel in the data networking equipment market since Alteon is already partnered in that area and has an existing revenue stream. Though Nortel has developed a robust presence in voice communications, it is making efforts to address the needs of the Internet equipment market.

House to focus on Net access and competition. (in telecommunications bill)
Article Abstract:
The U.S. Congress is planning to take up a law that addresses the issues of competition and line access for Internet service providers. In determining proper levels of competition, the legislators will encounter many complicated issues in the area broadband transmission as is pertains to DSL and cable modem services. The industry will be most affected by the provision that would allow competitors that have access to lines that are now controlled exclusively by certain telecom and cable companies.
