LGS Group to hire 500

LGS Group Inc. has announced plans to employ over 500 people in fiscal 1999 following posting a profit of C$1.3 million for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 1998. A 13-cent-per-share profit comes after a loss of C$761,000 or 8 cents a share for the same period in 1997. LGS, which recently completed a C$39-million special warrants offering, also reported a 67% growth in revenue to C$43.8 million. LGS senior executive vice-president Andre Gauthier said the number of full-time employees will grow from 1,600 to over 2,100 in fiscal 1999, majority of which in Montreal, Quebec.

Mosaid expects loss, layoffs

Mosaid Technologies Inc. of Kanata, Ontario, is expecting to post C$2 million to C$3 million in losses during the first quarter ending Jul. 31, 1998, and lay off nearly one-sixth of its 200 employees. Four analysts polled by First Call Corp. predicted that the company would break even in the first quarter ending Jul. 31, 1998. Mosaid Technologies, which is a supplier of manufacturing testing equipment and provider of memory chip design services, attributed its losses and problems to decreasing demand from the company's Japanese, Taiwanese and South Korean customers.

Quebec incentives lure Motorola

Motorola Canada Ltd has announced that it will invest C$100 million-C$300 million to build a new software development facility in Montreal, Quebec, after receiving up to C$50 million in financial packages over the next 10 years. The company will get C$13 million for its first C$50 million investment, $11 million for the nex C$50 million and C$320 million for the following C$200 million. Motorola will also get a C$15,000 subsidy for each worker's annual salary over the next decade.
