Let's cooperate
Article Abstract:
The future of cooperative companies in Australia is uncertain as they try to compete in an unregulated, and globalized economy. They are forced to compete with larger international and local companies that have stronger balance sheets and greater access to funding. In 1997, the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) announced it will modify its rules to accomodate fund raising by cooperatives. The policy shift was also as a result of ASX's desire to become a listed company.

Bullion bullies ... and hedging henchmen: speculation and government insensitivity, rather than fundamentals, underscore the gold price dip
Article Abstract:
Gold is Australia's second-largest export, and falling prices are threatening the industry's viability. Global demand has remained high for most of 1997, and mine production has remained steady. Independent price speculation and government indifference are the industry's biggest threats. Gold needs to be treated as a form of currency as well as a commodity, but removing the first concept will put the industry in peril.
