The Ontario Securities Commission proposed new rules that would restrict the financial and non-monetary incentives that some mutual funds pay to financial advisors. The mutual fund industry has come under increased scrutiny recently over ethical issues such as private trading by managers.

Ready to dance: Canada's banks are pushing for the right to merge

Canada's banking industry is lobbying a special government task force to remove the 10-per-cent rule and other regulations that hinder large acquisitions and mergers. The banks claim the changes are needed to stay competitive globally. A decision is due by Sep 1998.

No one has done more to protect Canadian mutual fund investors than Stromberg. The mutual fund trade group, The Investment Institute of Canada, voluntarily adopted 80% of the recommendations Stromberg made in her report on the $212-billion mutual fund industry.
