Lost in an unmanageable maze
Article Abstract:
The Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager (QEMM) 7.01 MS-DOS operating system enhancement causes an Intel 80386-based microcomputer to crash repeatedly. Resolving the problem proves difficult, owing to QEMM's poorly written manual and its lack of weekend help-number staffing. First, the program incorrectly disclaims responsibility for the crash. Then the manual, though it mentions the existence of the Manifest exception-troubleshooting program, never tells how to invoke it. Once a program file called MFT.EXE is discovered on DOS's QEMM subdirectory, it cannot be invoked due to the keyboard and mouse freezing up. After a two-day delay, Quarterdeck's help message arrives, containing the cryptic advice to check the SH:N, TM:N and RH:N parameters. This forces the user to read two difficult sections of the manual and then run the Qsetup program, all to no avail. It is finally determined that QEMM is incompatible with the Razzle Dazzle DOS screen-saver utility.
