Lotus to add electronic mail unit; upgraded version of Notes computer program also planned
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp announces its acquisition of electronic mail system publisher CC:Mail Inc. The acquisition marks the first big shift toward the integration of electronic mail by a major player in the computer software industry. Analysts believe that Lotus recognized the importance of e-mail in connection with the growth of its other software products. The company was reputed to have paid between $25 million to $30 million for the private company. Philippe Courtot, the head of cc:Mail, will retain his position although the acquired company will now become a division of Lotus. There are an estimated 850,000 users of cc:Mail's electronic mail system, and revenue for 1990 was $7.5 million.

Recent Novell software contains hidden virus
Article Abstract:
Novell Inc sends a letter to 3,800 of its customers to warn them about a software virus that might be contained with software shipped in Dec 1991. The virus is known as 'Stoned III.' According to a California computer expert, John McAfee, president of McAfee & Associates, there is potential for much damage from this virus. If even a few machines are infected, he says, the consequence could be that an entire network must be brought down. If so, the costs and liabilities could be significant. Novell officials have traced the virus to a part of their manufacturing process, but they do not know how the virus got there.
