MDS profit climbs 23%

Health sciences conglomerate MDS Inc's profit for the third quarter of 1999 rose 23% to C$22.5 million, or 38 cents per share, from C$18.3 million, or 32 cents a share. For the nine months of 1999, the firm reported the profit rose 19% to C$64.2 million, or C$1.11 per share, from C$53.8 million, or 95 cents per share. Toronto, Canada-based MDS Inc attributed the increase to high demand for mass spectrometry instruments and radioisotopes.

Genetronics shares plunge on lost deal

San Diego, Calif.-based Genetronics Biomedical Ltd., which is planning to launch its MedPulser system in Canada, lost significant share value following the announcement that its deal with Cincinnati, Ohio-based Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. has collapsed. Ethicon is owned by Johnson and Johnson.
